AI is just a running series of programs. However, once A.I. is inside of an animated physical structure, robotic or cybernetic, its a whole other ball game.
In a certain fantastic movie, the HAL_9000 was an A.I. system that was linked to the ship, Discovery_One. Thus in effect, HAL and the ship are one.
